As the planets Revolve asked:

Mixed cow manure with humus with good good garden soil from Lowes, and planted some plants and herbs in it.

I think using the cow manure was a bad idea because I noticed it stinks in the garden, attracts flies, and I think it is sufuorcating or burning the roots of some of my plants.

I even dug one plant up to save it and found maggots underneath it with a stench of cow manure.

Do you guys use cow manure? Also, I’m going for organic, does using cow manure invalidate that my crops are organic?

Did I use it wrong or something? A lot of my other plants seem to be doing ok, although I’m worried how they’ll turn out.

I’m thinking about just not watering them for awhile and letting everything dry out as everything seems damp.

Is that a good idea?

i have been working in my 2 gardens for the past 2 weeks getting it all ready, this year is the first time gardening so the soil was nothing but clay, i added organic garden soil with compost and i was told that peat moss helps break down the clay so i added 6 cubic feet of peat moss to one garden that is 8ft by 16ft, and my smaller garden is 5ft by 12ft and for this one i added top soil, organic garden soil and organic peat, because Lowes was out of the farfard peat moss, and i also added manure and compost, just finished today because its going to be raining the next 7 days here in indiana, im wondering if i need to go out there and cover my gardens up with a tarp(i dont have anything planted in there yet, all my plants were started by seeds and sitting in my window sill) or will everything be alright and wont get washed away?

i was at wal-mart the other day and they had this stuff in a bag called neutralime or something like that, i was wondering if that stuff was organic or not, because i was watching on youtube.com how to plant tomato plants and they were using lime down in the hole when they were transplanting their tomato plants, i was asking if this stuff is good to use and why people use it and if it is important to use, my soil in the garden has alot of clay in it, but i added alot of compost and 6 cubic feet of peat moss and organic garden soil, just seeing if i need the lime or not, i know you can get the soil tested but i really dont have the extra money to take a sample in and get it tested, ohh and today i went back to Lowes to get more peat moss and they were sold out but the guy told me that they have some organic peat humus..just wondering if this stuff will actually break up the clay, today i did the front garden and added alot of compost and organic garden soil and this peat humus stuff and a few bags of organic manure, please and thank you

I’m growing an organic vegetable garden but the soil has always been heavy and compacted. Its very hard to turn over and when it dries out it cracks and hardens even more.

What can I do to improve the existing soil that I have?

I’m going to start throwing compostable things, like old fruits and veggies, cut grass, egg shells, ect, into my garden.

My question is whether I should:
Throw them on top of the soil as I get more waste to put on it
Mix it into the soil
or
Put it all in a container for some time, then put it on or in the soil?

Also, what could I do in a short amount of time to make my soil drain a little less slowly?

Thank you!

Is using a special garden soil like Miracle Grow or Scott’s any better than just using a good bag of topsoil with low organic material in it (twigs, stone, clay). I need about 1cubic yard to fill raised beds and I can save a lot of money. I am growing vegetables. Home Depot has premium (screened) soil for about a third of the price as the Miracle Grow stuff. Even if I have to mix some peat or compost I should be better off cost wise.

In Florida sandy soils we need to get organic matter into the soil. I am wonder if that stuff from the vac. would help in that regard. Cannot decide how much organic might be there. Seems like it would be better to mix into garden soil than to send it to the landfill.
