organic recipes
TrytoAnswer asked:

I live in the tropics and wanted to know how to protect my squash plants as well as other plants from insects such as grasshoppers, ants, and squash bugs (stink bugs).

Any homemade/organic recipes would be great!

Does anyone have a good recipe for a green all-natural pesticide that will kill and/or detract rollie pollies (pill bugs) and/or tomato grubs?

I currently use a tea of onion, garlic, and chili pepper flakes, but that only seems to work on less durable bugs like aphids and ants.

It is important to me that my garden is financially sustainable, organic, and green, so please no commercial chemical suggestions.
I do have dogs so any recipes should also be pet-friendly (although I do typically restrict their access to the area).

Typically I wouldn’t be worried, but I live in an apartment and due to the ants entering the homes, the complex started using stuff to destroy the ants’ hills/ homes. However, we still have infestations (which I’m not worried about since it is centered in my bathroom), but the ants are covered in the poison (when you kill them the smell is all over the thing you killed them with). Now, my vegetable pots (currently just sprouting) are covered with ants as well. We are doing all organic, and am freaking with the idea the ants are carrying this poison through the soil and it will get into the plants roots, and thus carried to what we will eat. Is there anyway to stop them now, before they completely ruin my first attempt at gardening? Thank you!

If so, what do I do about them? They are relatively small (for ants) and I think they might be red and black. They are all over the place, and I don’t want to use any pesticides in my garden. I use organic miracle grow vegetable garden soil

I am noticing bite marks out of my green beans, yellow neck squash and cucumber plants. I don’t notice any bugs other than ants. What kind of non-chemical pesticide/bug deterrent can I use?

I just recieved a huge truckload of wood chips from the city and I’m wondering if it is okay to use it as mulch in my organic garden. I was told that they may attract ants to my garden. Do ants eat your vegies? Are there any other reasons I shouldn’t use the wood chips in my garden? I have about 300 sq. ft. to cover, so I’m hoping the wood chips will work fine. Also I’m going to use wood chips to cover my back porch where the land is eroding from the cement. I would like to build up the soil about 6 inches and put the wood chips on top of that. Can I just throw down a bunch of organic materials and then throw down the wood chips?

Well I guess this is alot of questions, thanks for answering!
