Easily Embarrassed - Organic Gardening

asked:

For a number of years, commercial farmers and home gardeners were made to believe that using chemical fertilizers is the way to go to grow good and healthy plants, and that pesticides and herbicides are the only effective way of controlling pests, weeds and plant diseases that commonly infest the garden.

But numerous studies have proven how these supposedly miracle products are causing more harm than benefits. Coincidentally, studies also show that organically grown foods are more nutritious and better tasting than those cultivated using these chemicals. In fact, a number of these products are already being pulled out from the market because of the level of toxicity that they contain.

And this only leaves us with one very important and sensible conclusion: Organic gardening is the safest and most natural way of growing plants without causing adverse effect on the quality of our food and damage on the soil and the environment.

But despite this, still quite a few frown at this method of gardening. We were condition to doing everything ‘the easy way’. Organic gardening, with its traditional strategies and natural processes, was often looked at as ‘the hard way’ of taking care of the garden. We think of it as an activity that requires long hours of back-breaking work. So naturally, many would still prefer the fuss-free and instant fixes that they get from commercial fertilizers and other related products.

Growing organic fruit in your garden has advantages over the fruit purchased in grocery stores. Organic fruit tastes better and you know that the fruit was not sprayed with any dangerous chemicals. The fruit that is planted in your garden was chosen by you because of its particular variety and you wanted to grow them organically.

Many of the plants that you plant in your garden are annuals, producing flowers or fruit only once, all in the same year that they were planted. A vast majority of fruit trees will not produce any fruit until the third year or later after planting. Once they start producing fruit they will continue every year, some years better than others, for generations. Some organic dwarf fruit trees that are container grown will produce fruit 1 to 2 seasons ahead of the earth grown trees.

Even if your yard is a small one you can still grow a fruit tree. Fruit trees produce blossoms in spring and it will enrich the soil around it. Your yard size determines the variety of fruit tree that is best for growing. Semi dwarf and dwarf fruit trees are best types for container growing. Fruit trees will not only need sunlight but they need protection from the wind. In order for fruit trees to bare fruit they need to be pollinated. Some of them are self-pollinating, some need pairs planted, and others must have three of a kind in order to be pollinated. Your local nursery will let you know which varieties are which

What makes organic gardening different from conventional gardening techniques? The simplest answer is that organic gardeners choose to use natural or organic materials and methods, avoiding artificial chemicals to increase their production. The two main areas that distinguish organic gardening are: 1) the application of fertilizer and 2) the fight against pests.

Natural Fertilizers: Better tasting products?

Although there is no scientific evidence that the use of organic fertilizers should produce better tasting products, most organic gardeners who beg to differ. We may accept the notion that we are ingesting too many chemicals in our food, limited use of chemical fertilizers can produce better tasting and better quality product. The use of organic compost to replace chemical fertilizers is one of the most common way to fatten your culture. Other solutions include the use of tea plant origin, such as compost tea. The use of organic matter also restores the soil by increasing organic matter content.

Eating organic produce is a growing trend in today’s eco-conscious and health centric world.  To that end, many families have turned to growing their own food at home so they can ensure a completely organic diet, and greenhouse gardening is one means of growing produce almost year-round.  However, even the strictest organic gardener must have some method of controlling common garden pests.  In this article, we’ll explore some organic pest control methods for greenhouse gardeners.

One of the major benefits of greenhouse gardening, aside from the obvious fact that your gardening activities can be extended into cooler months of the year, is that a greenhouse provides a physical barrier against some pests.  For example, moles, rabbits, and birds will not be an issue when cultivating plants in a greenhouse.  Greenhouses do also provide some added protection against various insects, though it is still possible to have infestations of common garden insects inside a greenhouse, so we’ll focus our organic pest control methods on insects.

One of the easiest ways to repel insects is through companion planting.  Almost every variety of insect has an aversion to some particular plant or another.  For example, marigolds planted among beans or potatoes will repel Colorado potato beetles and Mexican bean beetles.  Chives or garlic planted among lettuce or peas will deter aphids, and nasturtiums planted throughout your vegetables will deter a whole host of pests including cucumber beetles and squash bugs.  This is only a very small example of the various types of plants that can be paired together to repel pests.  For a more complete list, refer to a gardening resource book or website.
