Jen G asked:

I bought a bag of Miracle Grow Organic Garden Soil and after I opened it, I realized it wasn’t for containers. I’ve already read a ton of posts that you need to mix something with it or else the soil will compact and hold too much water. What I’m wondering is, what do I mix and how much? I’ve read everything from saw dust to peat moss so what would work best for vegetables? And what ratio do I add it to the garden soil? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

i think it would just be easier to buy potting soil 4- 10 bucks your going to have to buy the peat moss and other mix things anyway. besides i thought it was the other way around. i think if you don’t use potting soil your going to have to water the plants way more b/c regular soil don’t hold moisture well in containers and soil gets all hard

I’m growing potted plants and didn’t mix anything in particular in with the soil. What I did do was try to fertilize with natural stuff. I used coffee grinds for nitrogen, just a little milk in a gallon of water for calcium and a banana peel tea for phosphate. It’s kept the garden healthy so far.
