organic gardening
DeadlyDiarrhea asked:

Is this why America is so fat? Because when you go to a store, the healthy, organic style foods are higher priced than the man-made processed stuff. Doesn’t it cost more to make up fake food than to grow a garden? Why isn’t the good fruits and vegitables cheaper than the canned corn and instant mashed potatoe like stuff?

processed foods are made to sit on shelves for almost ever .. the healthy kinds will go bad very quickly by comparison…so shelf life is the answer.

well, um, lets go with some produce, health, non treated produce doesn’t have the preservatives on it or was subjected to pesticides, so less of it was brought to market because some of it is just plain bad, got infested with bugs, or died to plant diseases.

Processed produce however was treated with pesticides, given specific treatments for curing disease, and shot up with growth so they would grow much bigger much faster. This results in more of it making it to the market and at faster rates.

Preservatives play a big role in sealed items as well. Since the only natural preservatives are acids and salt, the health food stuff stays on shelf much less longer then things like a Twinkies which lasts forever. (I know a Twinkies won’t last forever, but you get the idea)
