grow organic vegetables
Diana asked:

I found this stuff sitting on the shelf on my local Smith’s. Someone help me with this one. How can ketchup be organic?

Ok so maybe the tomatoes and spices are grown more naturally without chemicals or hormones… but eh… it sits on a shelf. Which means it has preservatives. And it keeps as long as regular ketchup, which again means it has preservatives. Can preservatives be organic?

When I think organic, I think of fresh from the garden vegetables. Fresh of the tree, or vine, fruits. Fresh from the farm meats. I cannot see bottled, canned or other prepackaged items as organic.
You’re right, I haven’t been to a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. But I have a garden at my home. So most of my veggies are from that. I think this whole organic thing is a major marketing ploy if you really wanna know.

The USDA has around 1500 pages of organic standards. organic is more than just a term like natural, it is a way of growing food and managing farms. See for (a lot) more information.

So how can Ketchup be organic? It is organic when USDA Certified organic tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, spices are mixed together to make Ketchup. There are certain ingredients found in conventional Ketchup such as high fructose corn syrup that are not used in organic Ketchup.

As for preservatives, there are several organic preservatives that are natural such as vinegar and salt which have been used for millenia to preserve food.

Walk into any decent health food store and you will see hundreds of processed, packaged certified organic products such as canned beans, vinegars, juices, cereals, peanut and other nut butters, frozen foods, canned tomato sauce, etc.. this has been going on for decades and now that there is a national organic program you are seeing such things coming from big corporations such as Kellog’s, Libby’s, Ragu. etc.. in your non health food grocery stores such as Wal-Mart, Kroger’s, Wegeman’s, Meijer’s, etc..
