Noe Valley or the Richmond in the city. Or Alameda in the East Bay
The places all mentioned are pretty affordable and you blend well. However I am not sure why are you staying away from San Francisco? I know it is a little pricey there but there are some studios that are affordable you just need to really look. A lot of the districts there have what you described. Anyway I live in Pleasanton and I totally love it here the prices are not so bad compare to Frisco and I like the old town charm there’s a bike path, that a lot people use, a farmers market every saturday at old town pleasanton. Its about 45 minutes from san francisco by Bart.
Places like Berkeley, Kennsington, parts of Oakland, Marin, or Pacifica sound like they would fit you well. The only problem will be money. Every nice place in the bay area is expensive, so you might have to settle for wherever you can afford.
