organic gardening
mommy to 1 =) asked:

i am looking to make homemade baby food. we have a very large organic garden with fruits vegetables. i’m wondering if i can puree the produce and freeze it until my daughter starts eating, in wintertime. has anyone done it in this way? if not, how did you go about it? thanks!

in a food processor, all cooked food went in, (fresh vegetables, mince, chicken.) then put in little containers and froze.

I did it instead of buying baby food. We used veggies from my moms garden. I froze mine in Tupperware. It stayed a long time. I never let it get past two months though(my son liked to eat)

Yes. It keeps for 3 months in the freezer!

you can freeze almost any fruit/veggies. Just steam the hard ones. apples, pears, mangos, bananas don’t need cooking. cook carrots, zuchinni, peas, green beans. then process in the chopper, freeze in ice cube trays, and put into baggies. the mini chopper is inexpensive and works great.

I make my own baby food and puree it in my blender. I put the food in ice cube trays and freeze it, then put the cubes in labelled bags with the date on it. I’ve been told by our public health office that the food is only good for 30 days in the freezer though, so I’m not sure if you could make it now and save it for the winter… Shame really! But you could just buy organic veg when the time comes and make it with that…

yep its easy and the healthiest way to feed your baby, vegetables and fruits other than bananas and avacados need to be cooked until soft then pureed for babies 6-9ish months. this will make it soft enough to eat and easier on their stomach. steam or boil vegetable and then puree in a blender or processor with some of the cooking water until smooth, then poor into ice cube trays and freeze, once they are frozen you can pop them out and store the little cubes in a freezer bag so you can grab one or two at a time to defrost and mix into different combos.

this is a great website for advice and info on making baby food and what ages are appropriate for each food.

I took the vegetables and fruits and pureed them in small batches, and then froze them in ice cube trays. after they were completely frozen, I popped out the cubes into ziploc freezer bags, and labeled them with the type of food and the date. Get them out in the morning and place into a small bowl on the counter and in a few hours they will be ready to eat….or you can get them out the night before and refrigerate overnight.
