I’m going to school still and live in an apt. I want to grow my own organic herbs and vegetabesl. I just moved to SLC, Utah and actually plan to move back to Oregon in a year. I’d like to get things started though. What is your advice? I’d like to keep them potted for a while because I won’t have my own house to plant them in the ground at, for years. Thanks :)

I’ve heard that copper sheeting works…does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything else that’s non-toxic? (Read environmentally friendly, organic)

Do the plastic rain barrels off-gas chemicals into the rain water that would pollute the soil and vegetables?

Are there alternatives to plastic rain collection barrels???

What type of roofing do you need to use for rain collection so that chemicals from the roofing materials do not get washed into the water, and into the soil and vegetables???

Any info would be great. I would like to try and turn our little urban home into an ‘urban homestead’ and become a bit more self-sufficient. Thanks.

I would like to know a few of the best beginner gardening books available(new ones too), that completely help the new first-time gardener. From starting a garden, to knowing exactly how much topsoil and other fertilizer bags, peat moss - whatever, is needed. I have a design, it’s an 8′ x 8′ circle, and I would love to know how deep is a basic general amount to add the soil, how much. Also, what I need to buy in bags to get my soil all prepared. Can someone please help me in this area? I want to go as organic as possible for the first year - I realize in future years I will learn more and have more of a compost pile, but basically a small basic garden.

Thanks so much in advance - Starr

when you have to include the price of chicken fencing to keep out the strays neighbors’ cats from digging it up and the cost of water and fertilizers, etc?
And if you have to keep a room gas heated to have the indoor foods year round (big enough for 1 1/2 small cars)?
Especially if you want more organic foods that won’t have all those pesticides on them?
Anything I don’t eat right away can be preserved or hopefully sold.
What do you think?

I planted an indoor garden and my plants were growing really nice. I know have an extreme infestation of what I think are fungus gnats…they really like the soil. So I went today and got the fly sticky paper and it worked really well. I also wanted to kill the eggs and the ones in the soil so I got neem oil, it said it was for organic gardening. It did not have an effect on the bugs, just me and the plants. I feel sick to my stomach and have a headache since messing with it and four of my tomato plants died. They were close to dieing from the gnats eating their roots but the neem killed them off.

I heard that if you mix dish soap with water and then put it on the plants it kills the bugs and their eggs without harming the plants….Is this true? If so, how much dish soap to water do I use.

We are not convinced that adding more calcium to the soil will break it up and lower the pH - people keep telling us to add gypsum. We mulch mow thinking the added organic matter will decompose and help soften the soil. We have built up garden rows with boards, add peat yearly, drip irrigate it. Still the water added to the garden is very hard and it seems efforts to lower the pH are lost by using well water. Our area is in a drought, so rain water is extremely limited. Extended overhead watering leaves a white scale on whatever.

They’re still in the tiny containers I bought along w/ the seeds and organic starter soil mix but I’d like to start preparing for when they’re ready to be moved to the ground. What do you recommend? Is there like a cage but for garden plants? Thanks!
