Kyle asked:

The vegetables now are filled with pesticides, poison and all sorts of things which causes cancer, etc. Despite all those, is it even healthy not to eat vegetables or not to eat them? What’s the pros and cons? Also, if I buy vegetables with the label Organic on top of it, what does it mean? Someone told me it means they use organic fertilizers, but still, pesticides are used. Someone also told me that organic means they are grown naturally, no pesticides whatsoever. So, what’s the bottom line here?

I found this stuff sitting on the shelf on my local Smith’s. Someone help me with this one. How can ketchup be organic?

Ok so maybe the tomatoes and spices are grown more naturally without chemicals or hormones… but eh… it sits on a shelf. Which means it has preservatives. And it keeps as long as regular ketchup, which again means it has preservatives. Can preservatives be organic?

When I think organic, I think of fresh from the garden vegetables. Fresh of the tree, or vine, fruits. Fresh from the farm meats. I cannot see bottled, canned or other prepackaged items as organic.
You’re right, I haven’t been to a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. But I have a garden at my home. So most of my veggies are from that. I think this whole organic thing is a major marketing ploy if you really wanna know.

What can you tell me about organic foods?

I get the fact that they are grown with minimal or no chemical growth enhancers, but what else?

Do you have any other facts and do organic fruits and vegetables cost more than regular produce?
Oh yeah forgot to add that best answer gets 10 points

Once i heard organic vegetables can only be called that for one reason. that is if the vegetables are grown on land that nobody has farmed on for at least seven years. is this true if so why.

I live in London and would like to join a vegetable box scheme but I’d like to find one which emphasizes local and seasonal produce rather than organic produce. I am not a supporter of organic produce and would like to be able to instead support the 96% of british farmers who do not grow organically.

I’m interested in buying organic, but it’s expensive, so I’d like to focus my efforts on those products that require the most pesticides to grow conventionally. The info I’ve seen on this issue usually refers only to pesticide residue, which I’m not concerned about — I’m looking to minimize the overall impact on the environment. Basically, I’d like to keep buying less-expensive conventional products for foods that aren’t heavily treated, and pay the organic premium only for those foods that account for substantial pesticide use (or other environmental damage) when grown conventionally.

Would you pay more for healthier food? Do you buy locally grown vegetables and fruits or get the cheapest ones? Or doesn’t it matter to you where the food comes from or how it was grown?

At twice the price what is the value of organic grown foods and who actually oversees the process. We buy produce from Mexico, South America, etc. but who actually checks them?

tap water, for example (like water that comes out of the garden hose)? Isn’t organic mean they must use filtered water to grow their food?
