grow organic vegetables
someone satirical asked:

There has recently been a lot of suggestion that tomatoes can prevent cancer because of the anti-oxidants they contain, but is it not the whole diet that causes cancer ? High sugar, salt and fat have been shown to cause cancers but people are not looking back upon knowledge that could help them understand why cancers form. If you study the macrobiotic diet it explains that cancers can be both yin and yang and result from eating yin and yang foods together. It aims to prevent and cure cancer using foods that are balanced between yin and yang including beans, pulses, rice, wholegrains and organic vegetables grown in season. The book I am reading is very interesting -
The Cancer- Prevention Diet by Michio Kushi

I used to work for a cancer center in Detroit. One of its investigators, Omer Kucuk, M.D., conducted work with lycopene — a key ingredient in tomatoes (actually, the substance that makes tomatoes red and there’s been a lot of discussion of color as it relates to the antioxidant value). At the time, his research focused on reducing the size of prostate cancers (not prevention…but a basis for a hypothesis). He found that men who took lycopene supplements before surgery had smaller tumors at the time of surgery. However, when he conducted this work (a few years ago), he would NEVER offer the correct dosage of lycopene supplements in order to prevent cancer — prostate, or other forms. Reason being, there may be OTHER important vitamins, etc., in tomatoes that are important to diet and cancer prevention. I believe he was extending the research to cancer prevention. Google/Yahoo lycopene and Omer Kucuk. Should be able to help you more. Good luck. Let me know what you find.

No they don’t.

A healthy diet is always important but there is no diet or food proven to prevent or cause cancer.

It’s often easier and much less frightening for people who haven’t had cancer to ‘blame the victim; - to put cancer down to lifestyle choices like diet - than to accept that cancer is a largely random disease that can strike any of us at any time.

I used to believe it myself - I was sure my healthy, largely organic vegan diet would protect me against cancer. It didn’t. Tomatoes? One of my favourite foods.

The Cancer Prevention Diet may be an interesting book; don’t rely on its advice to protect against cancer.

The Macrobiotic Principles of Opposites all go with the yin and yang of foods.
Characteristics of Yang Foods

rich in potassium
grow well in warm or hot climate
grow faster
bigger
taller
softer
more watery
grow straight up in the air
grow sideways under the ground
leaves are bigger
leaf edge is smoother
cook quicker

Yin foods have a tendency to cool the body, loosen muscles, reduce tension, slow down things, create the need for more sleep. Elimination is looser and paler.

If eaten in excess for your condition, Yin foods can make you tired, cause anaemia, paleness, loss of appetite, loss of motivation, fear, and anxiety.

rich in sodium
grow well in cooler to cold climates
grow slower
smaller
shorter
harder
less watery
grow straight down into the ground
grow sideways on top the ground
leaves are smaller
leaf edge has more zigzags
cook slower

Yang foods have a tendency to warm the body, tighten muscles, cause tension, speed up movement, and lessen sleep time. Elimination is harder and darker.

If eaten in excess for your condition, Yang foods can cause fever, constipation, aggression, hostility, restlessness, and agitation

One of the main principles in the Macrobiotic way of eating
is to avoid excessive intake of extremely Yin or Yang foods.

Its all a balance as you know from the book you are reading. Tomatoes may not prevent cancer in themselves, but eaten with the right diet they may help.
