I would like to start my own organic garden because produce is so expensive and I think it would be a fun hobby because I am home a lot taking care of my brother. My grandma is giving me a compost bin this weekend so I’ll start on that. I have never done a compost or grown a garden so any information you could give me would be great.

I live on a half acre of property in Northern California. We get morning sun in the front yard and afternoon sun in the backyard and have red dirt on our property.

If you could explain to me like you’re talking to an idiot that would be great :) thanks

I’m volunteering to assist in a local community gardening project that will introduce and teach 75 families about organic gardening and need to get some math done before we can order our topsoil for the project asap.

I need to figure out how much soil I would need if each raised bed is 3 feet wide by 12 feet long and 20 inches in height. The beds need to be filled with topsoil to about 14 inches.

How would I figure out how much topsoil it would take per raised bed and than out how soil I would need for all 45 raised beds.

Than I need to calculate what its gonna to costs us for a community gardening project.

Local topsoil costs $350 per 12 cubic yards which is what comes in a dumptruck size load. How many loads would I need and what would the costs come too?

Please and thank you to anyone willing to help out here.

‘m really interested in growing organic vegetables and herbs but im not really sure where to start. I don’t want to plant in the ground of my backyard, I’d rather have a large rectangular type holder above ground. The only thing is is that I don’t really know if the potting soil you buy at the store is truly organic. Also, I am unsure of where i can buy quality seeds. Its not practical for me to buy them online. I’m looking to plant a variety of vegetables and herbs.
I forgot to mention i have 4 dogs… if that make any difference.

1. My garden is in my backyard, which is near a cornfield. My corn is a brighter green than the corn in the field. It is organic, but it doesn’t resemble the color like I think it should. It’s probably 3.5 or 4 feet high. Is it overwatered?

2. How does broccoli grow? I have a few plants, but I only see clusters of green leaves. I don’t see any sign of anything that looks like broccoli.

3. How can I keep japanese beetles off my potato plants organically?

4. When is a good time to harvest potatoes?

I want to have an organic herb garden. But because I have waited too long is it ok to buy starter plants that have a bit of pesticide used on them and never use pesticides again? Does the pesticide wash off? Can I just pinch off the part that had the pesticide used on it?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to best deal with out of control devil’s grass/crab grass, WITHOUT using too much toxic chemicals, and without destroying some really good soil? I am trying to avoid using Roundup, but I’m losing my resolve since these weeds keep coming back. Any ideas on organic alternatives or natural ways to deal with it, or do I have to bite the bullet and go chemical? The soil is really good, 50+ years of leaves adding to the mulch, and I don’t want to kill all those nice microorganisms and decaying matter. I have dug down 8-10 inches and removed all the root I could get, very very thoroughly. Someone suggested I use plastic “WeedBlock” sheeting and put real dirt on top. But what if weeds grow in that real dirt, they put down roots to or through the plastic, and I have to use gardening tools to get them out? Seems hard to prevent tears. Any input and ideas are appreciated!

Long story short, I am new at organic gardening and I used a homemade soap concoction to kill bugs. Now, my plants are burned, specifically, squash, cauliflower, basil, and the tomatoes are showing some signs. My question: is there any hope for my babies? Is it possible they could rebound on their own, or is there something I could do to help them???

Thanks!

According to HR875 and S425 Oraganic Farmers and Backyard Gardeners will have to use the same genetically modified seeds and spray the same Corporate back pesticides as the corporate farming conglomerates if they wish to grow food…
