The rain butts are open at the top for easy access when watering. They get colonised by insects, notably gnats, which become a nuisance around the garden. Lids and covers have not been very successful. Is there a suitable organic sterilising agent which will contol the insects without harming the plants in the garden? The water is primarily used on fruit and vegetables.

I would like to know a few of the best beginner gardening books available(new ones too), that completely help the new first-time gardener. From starting a garden, to knowing exactly how much topsoil and other fertilizer bags, peat moss - whatever, is needed. I have a design, it’s an 8′ x 8′ circle, and I would love to know how deep is a basic general amount to add the soil, how much. Also, what I need to buy in bags to get my soil all prepared. Can someone please help me in this area? I want to go as organic as possible for the first year - I realize in future years I will learn more and have more of a compost pile, but basically a small basic garden.

Thanks so much in advance - Starr

I hate to use chemicals on my lawn, I keep things very organic. I’ll tell you what I’ve done so far and if you could please give me additional advice I would be most greatful!!! I trimmed off any spotted leaves from the stem of the plant. I’ve checked the stem for any sign of disease and there does not appear to be any. I’ve cleaned the soil of any fallen leaves. This plant is new, planted rootstock this Spring. The area I planted in had never had roses before. This was the first addition to a rose garden I was just beginning, starting with a rose named Mary Rose which happens to be my recently deceased mom so I really want to keep the plant. PLEASE give me your best advice.
No, I’m not watering too much. If I’m guilty of anything it would be watering too little. The summer has been extremely dry and I know I should water them more. Could that be the problem???

My planting medium now contains 76% clay, 18% sand and larger particles and 6 % organic material. I want to mix in sand and organic material so I end up with a medium of 40% clay, 35% sand (larger inorganic particles) and 25% organic material, such as compost. All these items are by volume.

I’d like a formula I could use since I have other planting beds with different mixtures.

I have some herbs that I use in food and drink and need to find an organic bug control that works.

I have a few Spearmint Plants that need some help.

The leaves:
1.) are eaten and have holes in them
2.) have a powder coating on the top side of leaf
3.) some leaves have a fuzzy white coating on top side

The bugs: (ones I can see)
1.) small (pin-head sized), white bugs - on under side of leaf
2.) what looks like green inch worms - on under side of leaf

Is anyone familar with this and can you recommend a good, organic bug control… that really works well.

I have heard of using dish detergent and water to spay on them, but I don’t have luck with that.

Any suggestions?
