I planted an indoor garden and my plants were growing really nice. I know have an extreme infestation of what I think are fungus gnats…they really like the soil. So I went today and got the fly sticky paper and it worked really well. I also wanted to kill the eggs and the ones in the soil so I got neem oil, it said it was for organic gardening. It did not have an effect on the bugs, just me and the plants. I feel sick to my stomach and have a headache since messing with it and four of my tomato plants died. They were close to dieing from the gnats eating their roots but the neem killed them off.

I heard that if you mix dish soap with water and then put it on the plants it kills the bugs and their eggs without harming the plants….Is this true? If so, how much dish soap to water do I use.

I LOVE to make my own salsa and thought it would be cheaper and better to plant my own organic garden of hot peppers.

Anyway, most seeds I received from family and some I bought at the store and made sure the package said organic seeds.

Right now, a few of each seeds are planted in 4 inch clay pots. I did that because I live in a townhouse and have no real backyard or gardening area.

As of now, I’m watering them at night because that’s when my kids are asleep and aren’t trying to try and ‘help’ by pouring more water on my seeds.

I need to know what time of day is best to water and how often to water? Thanks for your help.

Great! What do you know about the following proposed legislation?

H.R. 759: Food Drug Administration Globalization Act of 2009
H.R. 875: Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009
H.R. 2749: Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009
S. 425: Food Safety and Tracking Improvement Act

I have heard rumors here and there that they could potentially make organic and other small farms, possibly even family gardens, financially unviable due to government interference. If true, this issue would be very important to the livelihood of all Americans, political persuasions aside.

What do you know about these fast-tracked food safety bills?
Obama has betrayed small farmers with his appointments of Taylor and Vilsack. But to those who squarely blame Obama Admin. for this, read the following quote:

Hi -

My yard has a BUNCH of twigs and old leaves. There is also a mixture of just dirt and bugs — I was wondering if I need to get rid of everything - the old leaves and organic things and lay down new soil — or can I just plant with everything mixed together (the old stuff and new soil)? I was just wondering because removing everything will be a lot of work…i have never done this before!!

thanks!

I’m working on a newspaper story about organic gardening and I’m trying to get an overview of the history of corporate farming in the U.S. and some of the big-name corporations normally associated with corporate farming, since it seems that the increasing emphasis on organic gardening and farming is, to a large degree, a reaction against corporate farming. Any resources anyone could point me to would be greatly appreciated.
Yep, I remember Farm Aid, MIE. I was 14 when that happened.

If you come across any links with information, let me know! :-)

We are not convinced that adding more calcium to the soil will break it up and lower the pH - people keep telling us to add gypsum. We mulch mow thinking the added organic matter will decompose and help soften the soil. We have built up garden rows with boards, add peat yearly, drip irrigate it. Still the water added to the garden is very hard and it seems efforts to lower the pH are lost by using well water. Our area is in a drought, so rain water is extremely limited. Extended overhead watering leaves a white scale on whatever.

I have the following plants to grow:

1. Blueberries.
2. Blackberries.
3. Strawberries.
4. Tomatoes.
5. Broccoli.
6. Red peppers.

I also have a few assorted plants but these are the ones I’m most concerned about. I really need help with SPECIFIC pesticides for specific plants because certain solutions (like diluted tobacco) can kill several of my plants.

I just purchased ORGANOCIDE. Does this work?
I just want to know for preventative measures. I haven’t seen any pests yet but my backyard is about 10,000 square feet and I want to be prepared.

I’m pretty sure this is what they are, they start as small beatles that jump and then turn into flying ones. What are some organic ways to get RID of them, not just minimize them.
